The PAVED Arts LadyShow Scholarship story:
Privilege means lots of things: freedom, opportunity, benefits and advantages. There are those who have automatic privileges because of their family history, gender, and culture. Canada has a huge history of European men being over privileged with arrangements like land grants, access to natural resources for profit and tax benefits so that they can afford to consume whatever they want, perhaps pick up a girl on 20th street.Aleyna May and Brigid Ward have identified and experienced the opposition, hostility, and resistance that grrrlz and women still encounter when choosing, dreaming and trying to make professional careers in music and video. In fact, it is sometimes as basic as having the right to speak freely without fear of violence or any kind of negative reaction, not to mention the right to creative voice and the belief that young women have the right to express themselves.
We are all familiar with the things I am describing and these are the polar opposites of privilege. LadyShow is a practical response to these observations It is an opportunity for young women to create a new type of advantage for themselves through the PAVED Arts LadyShow Scholarship that will provide female musicians with funds and access to professional level equipment and recoding facilities. PAVED Arts is honoured to share in and support LadyShow along with you, our treasured audience.
PAVED Arts is thankful to the Saskatchewan Arts Board, The Canada Council for the Arts, SaskCulture and the City of Saskatoon for their trust in us to find these important projects to use the equipment and facilites that they have subsidized.
