A creative workshop on varieties of microphones and recording techniques for new music and audio art. Jeff will use a collection of contact mics of different kinds attached to found objects as well as all of PAVED Arts stock of microphones. We'll experiment with different rooms to explore recording ambience. Special thanks to Isak Goldschneider for improvised clarinet. Limit of 6 participants.

This is a hands on electronics workshop where participants will take apart common household devices to understand the inner workings of switches, motors and batteries. We'll then use the parts to construct simple machines to test the theory and make improvised kinetic artworks. Tools will be provided although participants are encouraged to bring their own. Arduino and puredata programming may be discussed, time permitting.
Do you want to start your own internet TV channel? Thousands of people all over the world are starting to do just that with readily accessible software and hardware. This workshop will demonstrate the easy to use software available for this purpose and we will do some hands on broadcasting of our own internet TV show.
Instructor: Gilles Zolty
Gilles will be going over basic set-up of the mic in lab, instrument recording (guitars etc), pre-amps, software settings (Logic Studio and Motu control panel). And if there is time: some mixing basics, and a discussion of the new Isotope Mastering plugin.
Modul8 is a live video presentation software or VJ software that can be used during live events for projecting improvised video imagery. This workshop will describe how to use the Modul8 software, how to create video clips to load into Modul8 and how to set up midi devices to control Modul8. All the equipment used is available for rent from PAVED Arts. This will be a hands on workshop and participants are invited to bring their own Apple Mac laptops which the demo version of the software may be installed on.

Daniel Cross is co-founder/president at EYESTEELFILM in Montreal. With EyeSteelFilm Daniel, has also produced the Genie award winning Up The Yangtze, The Jutra award winning Last Train Home, the Genie nominated Rip: A Remix Manifesto, Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam, Antoine and Roach's political odessey Punk Le Vote.
He is an Assistant Professor at The Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, Concordia University and a founding member of The Concordia Documentary Centre. He plays hockey, walks his dog and has 2 sons (Gabriel and Nathaniel).

A hands on workshop explaining how to set up lighting and equipment for using a chroma key backdrop in video/photography production. This workshop will take place in the PAVED/AKA event space and use our inhouse lighting equipment and inhouse greenscreen.
Using advanced feature sets in FCP including colour correction, further editing tools such as slip, slide, audio controls, graphics generators as well as other programs within the FCP Studio. If participants have specific FCP questions or challenges they may submit them via e-mail and will be addressed as time allows.
Community Darkroom Users Meeting is for PAVED Arts Members who are interested in using the darkroom. This is not a workshop, this is a stakeholders meeting for the organization and members to help the facility manage the resources. All interested parties are welcome to attend.
This is an introduction to Apple's Logic music and sound editing and recording software. This is the primary software we use for audio at PAVED Arts. If you are interested in learning how to setup the microphones, how to record sound and do basic manipulation this is the workshop for you.
The second part of the Cinematography basics workshop. We will cover issues questions brought up by participants and topics for further study.
The National Film Board of Canada will be providing a free information session about this year’s FAP – Filmmakers Assistance Program. Anyone interested in applying for a grant may attend this free workshop.
A beginners guide to cinematography by an experienced local director. This workshop will be a hands on workshop for members to experience all the elements required to shoot a scene for video. Lighting, camera exposure, framing, etc will be covered.
This is an advanced Final Cut Pro workshop for those members who have some experience but need to accomplish certain specific tasks and want to know more. We will be accepting questions and detailed problems by email up until 24hrs before the workshop. This workshop will introduce members to all of our Sony camcorders (Z7U, FX7, TRV900) and help them understand the menus, operating features and image control features (exposure, gain, shutter, etc). You must take this workshop in order to rent the Z7U camera.

We will be exploring a cinematic moment inspired by a poem that is subjective as described by the philosopher Zizek. Referencing the Hitchcock film North by NorthWest I would review how the subjective camera angle can be used to create the illusion of perspective.
Participants should come prepared to discuss visual interpretations of a poem they have chosen.
A continuation of Final Cut Pro part I with time for a question and answer session.

Each participant will receive one cartridge of black and white super 8 film, 3 minutes in length. As a class we will process the film in buckets in the darkroom then share our creations.

Managing your website is an introductory workshop on running our own website through a CMS (Content Management System). We'll briefly examine different CMS systems and then use Word-Press as an example. We will focus on understanding the CMS web interface, structuring your site, choosing a template and doing minor design customization.

Following a brief demonstration of technique and some information about safe and successful circuit-bending practice, participants are helped in the deconstruction, modification, and reassembly of an electronic device for the making of new and strange sounds! This is an introductory workshop on Apple Motion, part of the Final Cut Pro Suite of video editing apps. Motion is used for compositing, special effects, titles, and video art. This brief tutorial will cover a interface overview as well as a few different example projects.

This is a brief overview of camera handling for video, including basic knowledge of focus, exposure, gain, proper lense maintenence and monitoring of the video image.
