Join award-winning filmmaker and PAVED member Tasha Hubbard (7 Minutes, Buffalo Calling, Two Worlds Colliding) as she discusses her upcoming feature documentary, Birth of a Family, produced by the National Film Board of Canada. A sensitive and powerful look at a dark chapter in our national history, the film follows four siblings who, after being separated at birth during the Sixties Scoop, come together as a family for the very first time.
Tasha will screen clips from the film, which has wrapped post-production and was edited using PAVED facilities, and lead a discussion on her approach to telling this story and her close collaboration with the members of this reunited family. This workshop will include information about the director/editor working relationship and how the project was developed through NFB production studios.
She’ll talk about the practical challenges of both shooting the film and working with the siblings to document an intensely private experience. Using examples from Birth of a Family, Tasha will consider the ethics around recording stories of trauma and discuss what a filmmaker’s responsibilities are in these situations.
