AKA & PAVED Arts Members
Call for Submissions: Cannon Project Wall – Billboard Exchange

Deadline: Monday, April 1, 2019

Open to Members of AKA Artist-Run and PAVED Arts

Background: AKA and PAVED Arts are collaborating with Hamilton Artists Inc. to stage billboard projects in outdoor spaces adjacent to our galleries. Facilitating an exchange between our centres has led to the following open call for submissions.

Neighbourhoods: AKA and PAVED Arts are seeking proposals for the “Cannon Project Wall,” a billboard space located on the side of the Hamilton Artist Inc. gallery space. Any member of AKA and/or PAVED Arts are welcome to submit a proposal that considers the concept of “neighbourhood,” potentially drawing on resonances between Hamilton and one’s own experience, or perhaps drawing on the concept in a more openly philosophical or conceptual mode. We are open to how the theme of “neighbourhood” may be interpreted, however we do ask that applicants consider the project in some manner that reflects on its appearance in the public sphere, as a visual element on a city street in a particular neighborhood.

This opportunity is treated as a solo exhibition paying full CARFAC artist fees. Located at the

intersection of James and Cannon Streets in downtown Hamilton, the billboard sees upwards of 10,000 vehicular and pedestrian traffic each day. The installation will be mounted for a full year, and often take the form of a printed vinyl banner. In exchange for this opportunity, Hamilton Artists Inc. will be programming two billboard projects of a more limited duration for the shared AKA/PAVED Arts billboard space at 424 20th Street West.

Submission Requirements: DEADLINE: MONDAY, APRIL 1ST, 2019

Production and installation costs will also be covered through this partnership, however there is no artist travel or accommodation included in the project budget. The dimensions of the “Cannon Project Wall” billboard space are 8’ high x 36’ wide. Please ensure that the artwork comprising your proposal conforms or is within this aspect ratio. The final print file will need

to be at least half the final size (as in 4x18ft) and high-res (300 dpi or larger), or full size and vector. For the purposes of the submission the image may be scaled 8 inches high by 36 inches wide at 72 dpi.

Please include in your submission (Maximum total 2Gb):
• Maximum 10 jpeg images of proposed work and past work
• Current Artist’s CV (3 pages max.)
• Artist statement about proposed work (350 words max.)
• Artist biography (150 words max.)

Submissions may be emailed to David LaRiviere artistic@pavedarts.ca with the subject line:
Cannon Project Wall Application_Your Name.

Please send the complete submission in a single PDF document including images. Digital or physical submissions in any other format will not be accepted.

Applicants will be notified by Friday, April 26, 2019.

If you have any questions concerning the application process please contact Derek Sandbeck (AKA) at gallerycoordinator@akaartistrun.com or 306-652-0044
