Tues. December 3rd, 7pm
AKA/PAVED Arts Event Space

Returning to Saskatoon following my grad studies in music composition and digital audio informatics, I found limited opportunities to pursue my practice professionally. The resulting desperation emboldened me to gig outside of my comfort zone: specifically, by working as a sound designer for the theatre (sans formal training). This workshop will present the crash course that I would have personally found useful as an outsider working in dramatic sound design. If time and interest permit, I would also be happy to describe the artistic and technical aspects of my own practice (my personal perspectives on music composition, and my use of the Max/MSP environment). Basic demonstrations will be given using QLab (ver. 3), but no computer/audio equipment or pre-study is required. If you have any examples of your own work that you’d like to share (time permitting) please feel free to bring them on a flash drive.

Darren Miller is a composer of research-based art music from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. His practice embraces both conventional instrumentation and its extension through technological means. Darren’s work has been presented in a variety of diverse, international venues; ranging from traditional concert halls and radio broadcasts to art galleries, theatres, bars, and experimental music collectives. Studies in Saskatoon, Victoria, Banff, Darmstadt, and Buffalo led to a PhD in music composition for work on the topic of audio morphing software. Darren is the co-founder and director of Sask New Music and the annual Strata Festival of New Music presented every June in Saskatoon. For more information, please consult: www.darrenmiller.ca
