“The paradox of arriving at a truly universal story is often found in its specificity.”

Stories can travel across borders, cultures, languages and barriers, so why do they sometimes feel like they won’t leave our backyard? This Hot Docs Doc Ignite workshop will provide participants with critical tools to lift their local stories to international markets and make them accessible to global audiences.

Julian Carrington is Distribution Manager at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. He oversees the Festival’s distribution marketplace, including the Distribution Rendezvous pitch meeting program, and the Doc Shop, the Festival’s on-demand industry screening library. Julian also currently serves as a film programmer with Toronto’s Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival. Previously, he acted as an associate programmer with the Toronto International Film Festival, and, from 2015 to 2017, managed the Documentary Organization of Canada’s Festival Concierge service. In that capacity, Julian supported documentary filmmakers in developing distribution and audience-engagement strategies, and promoted Canadian documentaries at festivals worldwide.
