January 22 – February 27, 2021
On view at PAVED Arts

For in-person visits, please email artistic@pavedarts.ca at least 24-hours in advance to book your exhibition viewing. Appointments are available Tuesday to Friday, between noon to six in half-hour blocks, capacity of 5 people.

Some of the images from the “Internet Vernacular” project may be disturbing to some people. Viewer and parental discretion is advised.
~

For the few of us obsessed with found photography, we often dream about treasure troves containing a variety of snapshots in various photographic formats, from Polaroids to prints to sundry forms of photographic negatives. These photographic objects are often obtained at flea markets, yard sales, thrift shops, estate sales, and in the trash. Vernacular photographs are anonymous snapshots of everyday life. As such, they were not intended to be artistic, and are often not technically proficient, yet these are some of the reasons this form of photography continues to capture the imagination. Although there might only be one gem in a collection of abandoned photos, that one photograph is often more compelling than the moments captured by those who consider themselves professional or artistic photographers. These vernacular gems reposition the amateur as an artist, and reveal the inherent democratized nature of photography. Internet Vernacular is a collection of digitally-born vernacular photography obtained while rummaging through the online photographic collections of users who haven’t posted in years.

Conspiracies in Isolation is a PAVED-commissioned artist book. This short artist book will be available online (with a limited number of physical copies available in-person), and is compiled from a series of thoughts and ideas related to Q—n. The book was developed under lockdown and contains personal reflections, observations, snapshots, and a few images found on the Internet while attempting to decipher the secrets behind the secrets.

[3d-flip-book mode=”fullscreen” id=”8283″ ][/3d-flip-book]

Publication Addendum

Clint Enns is a writer and visual artist living in Montreal, Quebec. His most recent project Internet Vernacular explores digitally-born vernacular photography. // clintenns.tumblr.com

~

Due to the content of this work, we are hesitant to state the name of the conspiracy group that the artist is critiquing in their publication, “Conspiracies in Isolation”. After we shared a Facebook event with the above text, our PAVED Arts Facebook page and all Admin’s personal accounts, were disabled immediately, without warning or reason given. All appeals to reinstate, so far, have been denied. The only conclusion that we could come to, was that stating the organization’s name on Facebook, seems to have contravened their Community Standards policy, resulting in a permanent ban.

Our Production Centre and Apollo Room were transformed over our temporary closure! PAVED Arts was thrilled to host Jo Van Lambalgen of Althaus Murals as our Artist-in-Residence for 6 weeks in August and September.

With so few people in our spaces during our closure, we saw an opportunity to safely invite an artist into the space and create two permanent murals for our membership to enjoy.

Thank you, Jo and thank you to SK Lotteries and the City of Saskatoon for their generous support in making our Artist in Residence Mural Project possible.

___________________
Jo Van Lambalgen is a queer, interdisciplinary artist in Saskatoon, SK, with a focus on large scale geometric and abstract murals and artwork. Their background in the trades informs their work, transforming ordinary spaces with paint, simple building materials and ingenuity. Jo believes in the power of colour, and how it can transform any space into something amazing. Jo is co-owner of Alt Haus in Saskatoon, a colourful home décor, furniture and lifestyle store, which they run with their partner Miranda Young. Jo and Miranda also work together on residential and commercial interior design projects, with an emphasis on “happy design.” @althausmurals and @althausyxe

A PAVED Arts At Home Distance Workshop:
#RisingYouth Community Service Grants Workshop
w/ Kayla Rosteski-Merasty

Tuesday, November 17th, 7pm on Zoom
FREE, open to all youth aged 15-30
Presented in partnership with Taking It Global.

If you are between the ages of 15-30 in Saskatoon, and you have an idea about how you can contribute positively to your community, this workshop is for you!

Rising Youth Community Service Grants empowers young people to imagine ideas that can support their local community and helps put those ideas into action through grants of $250, $750, or $1500.

Join PAVED Arts Technical Director, Lenore Maier, online for a free 60-minute ZOOM workshop that covers the basics of the new #risingyouth Community Service Grants for Youth. It’s your opportunity to ask questions and get tips on how to prepare and execute your own project as a #RisingYouth in Saskatoon. The #RisingYouth Community Service Grant is designed for youth ages 15-30, who are passionate about making a positive impact in their community, and who could benefit from receiving financial and mentor support to carry out these ideas.

Lenore will go over applicant eligibility, project eligibility with examples of successful past projects. We’ll go through the simple application and reporting process, as well as discuss and develop any ideas that attendees might already have.

Some examples of eligible projects are:

• A creative artistic project
• An anti-racist, climate justice, or other educational event
• An initiative in response to Covid-19
• Purchase and distribution of food hampers or electronic devices to those in need
• Outdoor education course
• YOUR Idea!

ISO-lation is a photo exhibition that presents multiple perspectives from individuals in our community and how they have coped with the global pandemic lockdown in 2020. What begins as a demonstration of how photography became a creative outlet for many to express their response to the pandemic then becomes an invitation into the exhibition to understand how this creative medium also helped them make sense of what was happening during this extraordinary and unexpected experience. The photographs showcase what our world looked and felt like and what people did to keep themselves occupied in the middle of quarantine. It provides insight into the ways in which everyday people continued on with their lives despite the fragile stability of their world. In its many forms, art has become more important than ever in the midst of the pandemic. With so much uncertainty, there exists a frenzied response for people to reveal their realities as they see them and understand them. The photographs in this exhibition speak to their journey.
– Chantelle Matkowski, ISO-lation Community Juror and Photographer

Artists include: Ian Andvaag, Simeon Taylor, Will Kaufhold, Nicole Hills, Michael Barber, Peter Stinson, Gillie Chartier, Laura Lee Giesbrecht, Zack MacGregor, Kaitlin Wong, Devin Hyde, Cindy M.
_______________

ISO-Lation Time Capsule is a collaborative photography project that invited everyone, young and old, in our community to submit photos of their time in isolation, as we protect our community from Covid-19. The intent of this project is to create a lasting photography exhibit of the unprecedented times in which we are living. In partnership with Tourism Saskatoon, the chosen photos will act as an archived time-capsule, and act as a reminder that even in times of crisis, art has a place. All photo submissions should be high-res, square format (or you’re okay with us cropping the photo) for posting!

Every month, we posted our favourites on Instagram and Facebook. After the final monthly call, all submissions were juried by a community of peers, and all photographers chosen for the final exhibition receive an honorarium, via contactless payment.

Part of our #PAVEDArtsAtHome programming.

The post ISO-Lation Time Capsule first appeared on PAVED Arts.

A PAVED Arts At Home – Online Distance Workshop:
Podcasting for Beginners w/ Lou Sheppard and Pamela Hart
Sunday, Dec. 6th, 1pm, Online via Zoom
FREE to everyone in the community

——

Podcasting for Beginners will lead participants through the nuts and bolts of creating a podcast- developing a con cept, recording yourself, recording interviews in person and over skype, basic audio editing and sharing your pod cast online. We will focus on recording audio on phones and computers and editing using free software. Participants are welcome to use any additional technology (microphones, zoom recorders) that they have access to.

Technology requirements: Participants will need to have a way to record audio files (a smartphone/tablet or laptop) and will need to have access to a computer or tablet that they can use to edit their audio. This workshop will cover basic audio editing using audacity (free download: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/) Please download and install audacity prior to the workshop. If you are uncertain about your technology please get in touch prior to the workshop.

To register for this free workshop, email technical@pavedarts.ca

~

Pamela Hart is a musician, audio engineer and community organizer. She first began singing as a young child in church, then spent her teens and early twenties performing in multiple rock bands, noise bands and folk projects in Otepoti, Aotearoa’s (Dunedin, NZ) infamous art-punk scene. In 2008 Pamela moved to Montreal to study at the School of Recording Arts Canada, and then worked as a touring audio engineer with Canadian projects Think About Life, Moonface, You Say Party and Mozarts Sister (Cecile believe) travelling across Europe, Scandinavia, The UK and North America. She regularly performed as a vocalist and guitarist making a record with her band Ledges, Blast and later joined Mozart’s Sister as a Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. In 2014 Pamela founded Montreal’s The Forever Chorus, an all voices choir with hundreds of members participating during its five year run. Pamela now works with the National Equitable Library Service creating accessible audiobooks, as well as with her own audio production company, Tender Audio. She now lives on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’Kmaq, Mi’kmaki / Nova Sco tia.

Lou Sheppard is an interdisciplinary artist working in audio, performance and installation based practice. They have exhibited in Canada and internationally, including in Paved’s 2019 residency and exhibition Lines of Flight. Sheppard received the Emerging Atlantic Artist Award in 2017, and has twice been longlisted for the Sobey Art Award (2018, 2020) receiving an international residency award in 2018. Sheppard’s artistic research reflects their background in critical theory and social activism. They are interested in languages, both as systems of notation and communica tion, as well as systems that structure and enact power. By looking to authoritative texts like taxonomies, environ mental data, diagnostic criteria, and government policy, their work attempts to make these systems and structures of power legible. Using processes of metaphor, translation, semiotic shift, and close reading, their work is evidenced through written, graphic and visual scores. The performance of these scores often leads them to collaborate with communities and with other artists, including musicians, visual artists and performing artists. Sheppard lives on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’Kmaq, Mi’kmaki / Nova Scotia.

Call for Submissions: ISO-Lation Time Capsule
Second Deadline (the last day of every month, until we re-open): June 30, 2020

PAVED Arts and Tourism Saskatoon are proud to launch ISO-Lation Time Capsule, our latest PAVED Arts at Home initiative!

ISO-Lation is a collaborative photography project that invites everyone, young and old, in our community to submit photos of their time in Isolation as we protect our community from Covid-19.

Every month, we’ll post our favourites on Instagram and Facebook. After the final monthly call, all submissions will be juried by a community of peers, and all photographers chosen for the final exhibition (Date TBA) will receive an honorarium (amount TBA), via contactless payment.

Submit up to 3 photos per month, free for everyone, no experience necessary!
This call for submissions is open to all Saskatoon & area residents keen on photography, regardless of their level of experience.

> Submit up to 3 photos per applicant. Images will be posted monthly, and considered by a jury for a presentation online, and once it is safe to do so, in a physical exhibition at PAVED Arts.

> PAVED Arts will also be displaying prints of the selected photos in the PAVED Arts Production Centre. Artists will receive an archival print of their photo, as well as have the opportunity to celebrate the exhibition launch at a reception at PAVED Arts (date TBA).

> Responses to the “ISO-Lation Time Capsule ” may be symbolic, figurative, literal, animal or mineral, just so long as the expression of ISO-Lation is in the suggested format.

> Space is limited and artist fees will be designated for applicants who are selected for printing and exhibition.

> All winning submissions will be featured on @PAVEDArts Instagram at a scaled-down resolution (1080 x 1080 px). We can also include animated gifs (1080 x 1080 px) or video (1920 x x1080 px) exclusive to the Instagram feed (not for exhibition). An Instagram size guide can be found here: later.com/blog/instagram-image-size“

This piece is a sister project to Allison’s Kiskisohcikew (they make things to make people remember) a performance that looks at the action of beading being used as a mnemonic device for language learning. nisitohtamowin expands on the connections between gesture and sound to create an introspective audio piece.

nisitohtamowin amplifies the sounds of beading to create larger gestures to seek understanding. This piece gestures through thoughts of despair, longing, seeking connection, and missing family, language, and land. nisitohtamowin asks viewers to take time to listen and witness an attempt to understand through gesture.

The finished piece is a beaded code that connects to the recording, utilizing capitalist symbols to express something deeply personal, symbolic, and in essence anti-capitalist.

September 18th – October 31, 2020
Billboard at 424-20th Street West, Saskatoon, SK

Laura Gildner is an intermedia artist whose research examines the boundaries of performativity and how we negotiate our performative selves in relation to those around us. The majority of her practice is focused on the creation of live and often participatory event-based productions that are later translated into video installations, photographs, and archives of the makeshift communities that develop as a result of their creation.

Tell Me What You Know I Want To Hear originated from one such happening, and depicts a pile of bodies cloaked in sequinned blankets, uniformly costumed, and partially concealed. Borrowing from the aesthetic pageantry of advertising yet devoid of any Photoshopped corrective measure, the legs at first appear almost mannequin-esque until further observation reveals imperfect signifiers of humanity. Confronting the absurdity of performance while meditating on the poetics of desire, Tell Me attempts to investigate how social choreography might inform the reality of our shared experience.

Artist Bio:
Laura Gildner lives and works on the unceded lands of the Lekwungen peoples (Victoria, BC). Most recently Gildner has exhibited at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Polygon, and at VIVO where her work Informer was a selected exhibition for this year’s Capture Photography Festival. Gildner is a graduate of the University of Victoria and is the 2020 recipient of the Lind Prize in Photography, Film, and Video Art.

The post Laura Gildner / Tell Me What You Know I Want To Hear first appeared on PAVED Arts.

PAVED Arts is proud to partner with Taking It Global in their #RisingYouth campaign that provides an expansive and accessible Community Grant Service for Youth.

As a partner, our staff are committed to providing mentor support and guidance to all youth in Saskatchewan who would like to learn more and become the next #RisingYouth in our community.

What is #RisingYouth?
#RisingYouth is a program led by TakingITGlobal to help youth build Canada and develop life skills by giving back to their communities. Created for youth by youth, we are building a program to increase involvement through community service. The program is currently funded to offer grants through March 2021. Our program is funded by the Government of Canada under the Canada Service Corps initiative.

In other words, #RisingYouth is an opportunity for youth aged 15-30 to receive financial and mentor support to carry out their own ideas for community development. If you have an idea about how you can contribute positively to your community, this grant is for you!

Some examples of eligible projects are:

An anti-racist, climate justice, or other educational event

An initiative in response to Covid-19

Purchase and distribution of food hampers or electronic devices to those in need

Outdoor education course

A creative artistic project

YOUR Idea!

If you, or someone you know, is interested in providing a service to your community, please get in touch with us at PAVED Arts and we would be happy to help see your initiative come to life through mentorship and financial support.

For more information, visit the website here: https://risingyouth.ca/ , or contact Lenore Maier at PAVED Arts at technical@pavedarts.ca

Ports of Entry / Janet Wang
AKA/PAVED Billboard space at 424 20th Street West
Co-presented by AKA, Hamilton Artists Inc., and PAVED Arts
July through August 2020

Based on research of Chinese-Canadian settler histories, and visual storytelling, Wang has created a panoramic digital work, Ports of Entry. This panorama is comprised of numerous smaller vignettes, tied together with references to the promised land of Gold Mountain.[1]

These narrative frames are based on waterways, rail, resources, art, and development. Each frame is a pastiche of chinoiserie by Jean-Baptiste Pillement (French, Lyons 1728–1808), whose Rococo artwork was filled with fantastical flora and creatures, with projections of Orientalist narratives popularized with European consumers.

Ports of Entry illustrates sociopolitical narratives around the Chinese diaspora and the hyphenated identity of Chinese-Canadians. The hyphen is a tenuous site that immigrants occupy, a line that shifts and moves with the tide, a marker that is both a limit and an opening.

This work looks at the speculative nature of migration; the patterns found in the histories of labour, movement and settling. These patterns are evidence of who has privilege, and who does not. Shorelines represent a limit that is constantly in flux, evolving and shifting in response to industry and development.

This installation is part of a national billboard exchange between Hamilton Artists Inc., AKA Artist-run and PAVED Arts in Saskatoon. The three-way collaboration also included billboard projects by artists Catherine Blackburn at Hamilton Artists Inc from June 2019 to May 2020 and Janet Wang at AKA/Paved in July through August 2020.

[1] Early migration from China to British Columbia was centred around the Gold Rush – the workers referred to Canadian, American and Australian colonies as “Gum San,” or Gold Mountain. Ministry of International Trade. “Gold Mountain.” Province of British Columbia, Province of British Columbia, 24 Nov. 2016,
www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/governments/multiculturalism-anti-racism/chinese-legacybc/history/gold-mountain.

Image: Ports of Entry (Detail), Janet Wang

Janet Wang is a visual artist working within a traditional painting practice, integrated with sculptural installation practices and digital media. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia and her Master of Arts in Studio Practice from the University of Leeds in England. Her work explores the construction of identity through the appropriation and disruption of social patterns and familiar gestures. The artist borrows heavily from the canons and traditions of history, both the artistic and the quotidian, in order to use the familiar as a meeting point with the viewer. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and is represented through the Art Rental and Sales, operated by the Vancouver Art Gallery. She has been awarded residencies from the Arts Council of England, ArtStarts, the Burnaby Arts Council, and received awards from the Vancouver Foundation and the BC Arts Council.

Hamilton Artist Inc.(The Inc.) is a not-for-profit, artist-run centre that empowers artists of all career levels to take risks with their contemporary visual arts practices and present their work in a critical context.

AKA Artist-run is a non-profit artist-run centre, run by a board of Saskatoon-based artists and cultural workers. Funded by the federal, provincial, and municipal governments, AKA pays fees to artists to support the research, creation, and exhibition of visual art work. A centre for emergent practices for artists at any stage of their careers, AKA provides space and support for critical, safe, and open exchange and is committed to creating space for experimentation, artist-led research, and self-determined direction. AKA aims to build connections between artists, local communities, and national and international audiences, posing questions without knowing the answers.

The post National Billboard Exchange first appeared on PAVED Arts.

Our newest program aims to keep youth connected and creative through hip hop, freestyle and spoken word. Cypher Connect will take place every Monday through Zoom meet-ups. Hosted by ZHE the Free (aka Zoe Slusar), Cypher Connect will also feature different Artist Mentors every week, who’ll work with youth to level up their skills in rap, freestyle, poetry and spoken word performance.

Cypher Connect will focus on the elements of rap including writing bars, developing freestyle skills, use of poetic devices, performance and delivery, cadence and tapping into “the flow”. Every Monday we’ll circle up, Zoom style, to share in learning about the various elements involved in producing your own creative piece.

It’s free, easy to access, and comes with FREE FOOD, where we’ll feature a local restaurant each week, and have a nutritious meal delivered to your door! All you need to do is register online and sign in to the Monday sessions, and PAVED Arts will hook you up with dinner and some inside knowledge. Cypher Connect is a place for you to showcase your art and experience Cypher*, while developing skills to enhance your artistic talent.

*Cypher involves a group coming together to share in freestyle creative expression and aims to bring youth together in artistic community. These meet-ups allow youth to learn from community role models & mentors, showcase their art, share what they’ve been working on, while developing skills to enhance their rap and poetry abilities.

The values of Cypher Connect align with the values of hip hop: respect, unity, creative expression, showing up authentically, artistic and personal growth.
