Bee Taxidermy for Beginners Workshop w/ Ruth Marsh
Saturday, November 3rd, 12-3pm
PAVED Arts Gallery (Main Floor)

Learn techniques from the World’s Foremost Bee Taxidermist! If you’re an aspiring bee taxidermist and want to grow your craft on a strong foundation, the best way to do it – by far – is one-on-one instruction. You could learn from video tutorials, but you can’t stop a video and ask the instructor if you’ve done it right. In Ruth Marsh’s one-of-a-kind workshop, you’ll get direct feedback and you won’t move on to the next level until you know your work is correct. As the world’s foremost Bee Taxidermist, Ruth Marsh brings nearly a decade of experience to PAVED Arts for this one of a kind workshop.

At the beginner level you will learn three key foundational techniques of bee taxidermy:
1. How to construct bee legs out of reclaimed electronic resistors;
2. How to braid bee antennae out of fine wire and;
3. How to mould bee wings out of salvaged copper.

Given that the full process of Bee Taxidermy requires several weeks to complete and time is limited, you will be provided with a pre-preserved and reassembled, taxidermic bee-body-base (head, thorax and abdomen). During the workshop, you will be given instruction on how to properly and safely attach antennae, wings and legs to this basic bee body. Workshop participants will be provided with take-home information on how to prepare and preserve a dead bee body from scratch. All of the pieces that you work on during the workshop will be yours to take home.

This workshop is intended as an entry level course which will give you the confidence you need to prepare and preserve heirloom quality taxidermic bees for your family to enjoy for generations to come!

Ruth Marsh is a Canadian multidisciplinary artist of settler ancestry based out of Kjipuktuk (Halifax, NS) which is located on unceded Mi’Kmaq territory. Her work employs an absurdist and often comically deadpan approach to address absence, longing, memory and healing both in bodies and environments. She is interested in exploring the ways in which modalities of labour can translate into enacted care: exertion as meditation, repetition as litany, effort over time as love. Since graduating from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2006, her practice has spanned painting, drawing, taxidermy, video, performance, installation and stop-motion animation. Her work has been shown in galleries, museums and festivals in Canada and abroad including The Confederation Centre of the Arts (Charlottetown, PE),The New Gallery (Calgary, AB) and Bideodromo International Film Festival (Bilbao, Spain).

For several years, Ruth has been creating a series of artworks which focus specifically on bee disappearance and decrepitude. Summoned through an ongoing public call, hundreds of found, dead bees are sent through the mail to my Halifax studio from individuals across Canada. Once received, the bees are taxidermically preserved and meticulously repaired using discarded technology. The newly refurbished bees are then revived, frame-by-frame, through the process of stop motion animation.

Approaching this work from a perspective which is part cyberpunk mad-scientist and part devoted, repair technician, her work mindfully employs techniques which mirror bee life itself. Through processes which are inherently labour intensive, repetitive and painstaking, she is building a wry vision of a future wherein the world’s bees have perished due to human causes. Ruth is assembling this invented story through animations, still images, immersive video installations, a DIY instructional video and a growing museum of taxidermically preserved bee specimens.

On view November 2 to December 8, 2018 at PAVED Arts
Opening Reception: Friday, November 2, 8pm

“No one can conceive the variety of feelings which bore me onwards, like a hurricane, in the first enthusiasm of success. Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world. A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me. No father could claim the gratitude of his child so completely as I should deserve theirs. Pursuing these reflections, I thought that if I could bestow animation upon lifeless matter, I might in process of time (although I now found it impossible) renew life where death had apparently devoted the body to corruption.

…One secret which I alone possessed was the hope to which I had dedicated myself; and the moon gazed on my midnight labours, while, with unrelaxed and breathless eagerness, I pursued nature to her hiding-places.”

At PAVED arts, you are invited to enter The World of Ideal Bounds on many fronts. PAVED Arts’ main gallery space is converted into a pristine, brightly-lit, Bee Taxidermy museum wherein five hundred mended and refurbished bees line shelves in the gallery space. Each bee is labeled with a number which corresponds to a reference booklet within which museum visitors are invited to look up the information provided for each bee (Where was the bee found? How did it die? etc). The DIY instructional video Bee Taxidermy: A How To Guide will be playing on a small screen within the museum for the duration of the exhibition.

Coupled with this presentation, a series of stop motion animations will depict a documentary exploration of a technologically enhanced bee hive in six non-linear acts. The viewer will be introduced to the perspective of a single cyborg bee character whose plight they will follow through a cybernetically altered environment.

In addition, on November 3rd, 2018, The World’s Foremost Bee Taxidermist will be conducting a performative workshop within the gallery space in which attendees will be taught the fundamentals of bee taxidermy. All are encouraged to interact with this piece by phoning 1-833-TAXIBEE to make enquiries in person or leave a message. All calls will be recorded and used in a future iteration of the work.

On view January 17 – February 16, 2019
Opening Reception: Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 8pm
Artist talk: Thursday, January 17 at 7pm

It all started with a cardboard box on the street.
I should have just left it there
but I liked looking at it, and being around it.
So many pictures and words…
Few were turned to lights.

Chicago called, and I had to deliver the work from Saskatoon.
It was a long drive, a long stay.
Missed home, drove back
Empty car.
Almost a year has passed.
Fetched my green, glowing, Documents.
Full car.

A lot of time was spent on the highway that year.
Too much time has passed.
But I am glad to be here
with my hog
and Celine.

Julie Oh’s solo exhibition at PAVED Arts presents a new body of work composed of large-scale neon sculptures, drawings on cardboard, video, and a live sound feedback. These eclectic mix of works are formally and conceptually bound by a single object, of which the artist found on the streets of Saskatoon just outside of a Harley Davidson motorcycle dealer. Through the practice of looking, pondering, and circling around this found shipping container over a long period of time, the works in this exhibition aims to offer a distanced, yet intimate understanding of the original object.

Artist Bio:

Julie Oh (b.1984, Seoul, South Korea) lives and works in Saskatoon. She was the 2018 feature artist for the RBC Emerging Artist Series at Remai Modern. Recent group exhibitions include: Living Architecture, 6018 North, Chicago; Double Gaze, ACRE Projects Gallery, Chicago; Punctured Landscape, Art Museum of the Americas, Washington, DC. Julie completed her MFA as a Fulbright Fellow at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012, and holds a BFA from the University of Saskatchewan.

The artist would like to thank the Canada Council for the Arts for their support in realizing this project.

PAVED Arts and Nuit Blanche Saskatoon present:
Robotic Bug Workshop w/ Stefan Scott
Saturday, September 30th, 12-4pm
AKA/PAVED Arts Event Space
This workshop is FREE for children and adults alike. You do not need to be a PAVED Arts member to attend.

During this workshop, Stefan Scott will teach how to make a battery-operated, responsive “bug”. The bug will crawl along the ground on geared wheels. It will be programmed so that its antennae act as sensors: when the bug bumps into obstacles, its antennae will send signals to the wheels to turn left or right to move around the obstacle. Each participant will be able to build and take home their own robotic bug. Stefan is a Computer Science and Robotics teacher at Aden Bowman Collegiate and will ensure this workshop is suitable for all ages.

Stefan Scott is a computer science and creative digital arts instructor who lives in Saskatoon. Ever since starting up an extracurricular robotics program three years ago, he’s been fascinated by the creative possibilities with electronics, microcontrollers, and project-based learning that is driven by computer science.

The post Robotic Bug Workshop w/ Stefan Scott first appeared on PAVED Arts.

About Kate:
Kate Carr has been investigating the intersections between sound, place, and emotionality both as an artist and a curator since 2010. During this time, she has ventured from tiny fishing villages in northern Iceland, explored the flooded banks of the Seine in a nuclear power plant town, and recorded wildlife in South Africa and in the wetlands of southern Mexico.

Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wire, Pitchfork, Fact Magazine, The Quietus, and The Guardian. It has also been played on radio stations ranging from various channels of the BBC, to independent stations in Estonia. Her music can be found on the labels Helen Scarsdale (US), Rivertones (UK), Soft (France) 3Leaves (Hungary) Galaverna (Italy) as well as on her own label, Flaming Pines.

Recently, she has been doing more live work, with gigs at London’s Cafe Oto, Riga’s White Night’s festival, the Bello Bar in Dublin, and even a show performed from the deck of a restored herring trawler in Siglufjordur in Northern Iceland. Carr is Australian, and lives in London.

Starting today, as part of the fourth annual Toon’s On Transit campaign, thirty local photographers will have their work on display in Saskatoon Transit buses as part of a 2 month roaming gallery exhibition. The winning works will also be on display for 2 weeks at PAVED Arts (424 20th Street W).

A call was put out to Saskatoon and area photographers to submit photographs depicting “Diverse Communities.” The Open Call resulted in submissions from more than 80 photographers. Submissions were narrowed down to 30 by a community jury consisting of Cory Schewaga (Artist/Photographer/Videographer), Ben Lindsay (Youth Coordinator, Out Saskatoon), and John Shelling (Graphic Designer/Artist).

For nine weeks, 60 city buses will feature these unique photographs. “Saskatoon Transit is proud to support community initiatives such as this one,” says Jim McDonald, Director of Saskatoon Transit. “Toons on Transit allows residents from every neighborhood in Saskatoon to experience a piece of local art.”

PAVED Arts will also be displaying prints of the winning photos in their Digital Photography Suite. The Digital Photography Suite is open to the public Tuesday to Friday, from noon to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from noon – 4:00 p.m. This is a unique opportunity for visitors and residents to view the City through the eyes of the artists and honours the artists with a professional print of their work.

Toon’s On Transit is a continuation of PAVED (photography, audio, video, electronic, and digital) Arts programming that highlights the talents of local artists through outreach and exhibitions. Located in the heart of Riversdale, PAVED Arts has been facilitating independent media artists for over a decade. Their gallery space highlights emerging artistic talent from the community. “We are excited to take Toon’s on Transit into every neighbourhood of Saskatoon,” says Travis Cole, PAVED Arts Executive Director.

A situation for an alert and knowledgeable citizenry

On View September 14 to October 20, 2018
Opening Reception: Friday, September 14, 8pm
Artist Talk: Friday, September 14, 7pm – Upstairs Event Space

~

“Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together”. ~Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower, January 1961

Electromagnetic forces can be shaped, modulated, monitored or transformed in order for them to be utilized. The FRAGILE SAFARI situations are constituted as a ‘parcours’ through two bodies of work. The first work is the evolved signals intelligence (SIGINT) work: We Should Take Nothing for Granted – On The Building of An Alert And Knowledgeable Citizenry the second is the spatial electromagnetic installation STAR VALLEY (ICARUS).

Together, the works provoke a sensorial experience of the immaterial electromagnetic spectrum, and open well-defined societal questions regarding notions of privacy in the 21st century. Collectively, the elements form a tactical media landscape that is conceived as an “electromagnetic theatre” in order to engage the visitors/participants on multiple levels; technologically, intuitively, intellectually and politically. Arguably the electromagnetic spectrum is the most valuable, yet non-exhaustable natural resource, while it’s control and use continues to be strategically significant and economically vital.

Central to both works are probes, the devices that are probing multiple aspects of the electromagnetic spectrum by monitoring or transmitting signals in order to observe or occupy the spectrum. These acts activate civic potentials to engage and re-imagine the relationship between the global citizenry and sovereign actors with the military industrial complexes including their visible, opaque and dark structures by addressing current positions and debates about the notions and structuring of privacy, surveillance states, and safetylss. Each element in FRAGILE SAFARI is the result of research and construction of hardware and software systems nto be utilized as a set of tools, in order to gain knowledge of the occupation, use and potential misuse of global mass communication infrastructures.

STAR VALLEY (ICARUS), is a single spark-gap transmitter lthat occupies and overwhelms local signals . The transmitter is controlled by a computer running a neural network that has been trained on US/NATO codenames, describing units, orders of battle and/or military operations and their descriptions in order to generate new names, theatres, and directives of ‘imaginary’ operations both from the past and projected into the future, highlighting the intentional obfuscation of facts from the public.

Lastly, We Should Take Nothing for Granted – On The Building of An Alert And Knowledgeable Citizenry, is designed to demonstrate the fragility of the local communications infrastructure by probing the visitor’s personal communication devices while creating a generative sonic landscape of over 20 years of collective signal monitoring archives using Eisenhower’s presidential farewell address from 1961 as a compositional tool.

The title for the series FRAGILE SAFARI is derived from another “safari”, the BIG SAFARI, which is a specialized black USAF program dedicated to air systems modification for collection and processing of SIGINT (signals intelligence) and COMINT (communications intelligence) data, as well as offensive and defensive electronic warfare. The program is one of the oldest electronic warfare related programs and responsible for much of the SIGINT collection globally since 1952.

The works on display are small part of the evolutionary toolkit that Biederman and Peljhan have been creating over the past 20 years in order to re-examine and redefine our relationship to the political, philosophical and physical conditions of the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

The artists would like to thank the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Ministry of Culture Republic of Slovenia, City of Ljubljana Cultural Department, C-ASTRAL and the University of California Santa Barbara Media Arts and Technology Systemics Lab and the Wave Farm (Acra, NY) for their financial and material support.
Saturday September 15th, 12pm-4pm
AKA/PAVED Arts Event Space

Every wonder where all the sounds in your favorite film or television show come from? A lot of them are custom made by Foley or sound effects artists, and used to enhance the soundscape of the final product. Foley is the art of recording everyday noises and adding them to media to enhance the realism, or manipulating these sounds to create something bigger than life (think explosions, mythical creatures, etc.).

Join us for an afternoon workshop that covers the history of Foley, and teaches you how to record, create and customize your own sounds to use in your very own films.

Emma Kramer-Rodger is a musician, composer and audio engineer based in Regina, Saskatchewan. She is passionate about working in a variety of entertainment mediums including film, video games and virtual reality. Emma has completed a Bachelor’s degree in music performance from the University of Regina and a certificate in Audio Production for Film and Video Games from Berklee College of Music Online. Currently working full time at Talking Dog Studios, she has worked on a number of independent video games and larger film productions, including Distorted and The Humanity Bureau. In addition to creating unique sound effects and Foley, Emma also has a passion for music composition and creating virtual reality spatial audio.

Members: FREE
Non-members: $50 (Price of membership at time of registration or $25 for students/underemployed)

The post Foley: The Art of Creating Custom Sounds for Films w/ Emma Kramer-Rodger first appeared on PAVED Arts.

We’re proud to present 9 amazing music videos created by youth during our 2nd DIY: Direct it Yourself Youth Music Video Camp!

This summer, between July 30th-Aug. 3rd, 2018, thirteen youth from our community between the ages of 13-21, were given the opportunity to create music videos using songs generously provided by local musicians including Wild Black, Too Soon Monsoon, DAYTRVP, the Faps, Taylor Jade, Factor, Jezebel, and Natural Sympathies.

Through this free workshop, young people learned hands-on filmmaking techniques and skills such as shooting, directing and editing video, stop motion, video collaging, lighting, and more, while being mentored through the process by local musicians, artists, and community leaders. The resulting music videos were screened to a standing-room-only audience on August 3rd, in the PAVED Arts/AKA event space.

This workshop was generously funded through the Community Initiatives Fund and we thank them for their amazing and ongoing support.

Apply Here!

PAVED Arts has received funding once again to facilitate the second DIY week long video music workshop for youth in our community. The 5 day camp intends to empower and educate youth. Participants between the ages of 13-21 will work through a series of educational workshops that teach both technical and theoretical aspects of music video production. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with dynamic local artists and professionals in a creative, hands-on environment and they will work together in teams to produce music videos and interactive photo/video collages for songs donated by established Saskatoon bands and musicians.

The camp will take place at PAVED Arts July 30th – August 3rd, with lunch provided daily.

Although the goals of this camp are not results based, the program will conclude with an official FREE screening of the music videos created during the week on Friday August 3rd in the PAVED Arts event space at 7:30pm.

This camp is open to everyone, however preference will be given to female, trans, two-spirit, gender non-conforming and equity seeking youth. With room for a maximum of 20 participants.

Beyond leaving the program with a more advanced understanding of storytelling, creative expression, photography, and video production, this program also aims to educate participants in areas such as media literacy and community development.

This program will incorporate the use of digital cameras, video cameras and computers/laptops on which the youth will be able to edit their videos and sync them with music using affordable and accessible software supplied by PAVED Arts Production centre.

Laura St. Pierre / Spectral Garden
On view July 6 to August 11
Opening Reception: Friday, July 6 at 8pm
Artist Talk: Friday, July 6 at 7pm

For the last decade, Laura St. Pierre has created installation, photo, and time-based works that question how we live in cities and on our planet. Her current project, Spectral Garden, involves collecting and preserving flora from changing landscapes. Using a technique common to botanists, the plants are preserved in isopropyl alcohol. This maintains their three-dimensional form, but leeches the colour from their flowers and leaves. Unlike a seed or a cutting, these tissues cannot be used to create new life; instead, they preserve a moment in time and space.

Since returning to Saskatchewan in 2013, St. Pierre has been struck by the poor air quality that the residents of Saskatoon experience due to forest fires that have been raging in the Western Boreal Forest each summer. For weeks at a time, city-dwellers can smell the forest burning: the odour is a powerful reminder of how this ecosystem is changing. In response, she began to collect plant specimens from the Boreal Forest near Jan Lake, SK, close to her family’s cabin. Since her last visit to the area, it has also been ravaged by fires, a fact that resonates as she works in the studio.

These carefully preserved plants have been the subject of a series of photographs. New for PAVED Arts, St. Pierre is creating a four-channel HD video projection that uses these unique specimens as a jumping-off point. Immersive and otherworldly, Spectral Garden continues St. Pierre’s exploration of our relationship to the natural world.

This project is presented by PAVED Arts, in a partnership with the Dunlop Art Gallery as part of Roadside Attractions, funded through the Canada Council for the Arts’ New Chapter initiative.

Bio:
Laura St. Pierre’s installations, sculptures, public works, and photography have been exhibited throughout Canada and abroad. St. Pierre earned undergraduate degrees at UBC and the U of A, and completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at Concordia University in Montreal. She has received arts grants from the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Quebec, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, and the Canada Council. Exhibitions in 2018 include Winter Garden at VivianeArt (Calgary), The Museum of Future History and the Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina), La vie fragile (Montreal), and a new video project at PAVED Arts (Saskatoon) as part of the Roadside Attractions series developed by the the Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina). // laurastpierre.com

Please join us Friday, May 11th for the first day of Scott Benesiinaabandan’s Animiikikaa 10-97. PAVED Arts will host an informal meet and greet with the artist from 7 to 9 PM.

Animiikikaa 10-97 is a 3-channel audio installation originally commissioned by the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The installation, featuring a woman speaking clearly in the Anishinaabe language, develops the notion that the particular sonorous qualities of indigenous spoken word is unfamiliar to the vast majority of people who live in its native country. Benesiinaabandan’s gesture also reflects upon a recent history in which the Anishinaabe language was actively subjugated, such that placing it into the public sphere constitutes a political act in itself.

Scott Benesiinaabandan is an Anishinaabe intermedia artist that works primarily in photography, video, audio and printmaking. Scott has completed an international residencies at Parramatta Artist Studios in Australia, Context Gallery in Derry, North of Ireland, and University Lethbridge/Royal Institute of Technology iAIR residency, along with international collaborative projects in both the U.K and Ireland. Scott is currently based in Montreal, where he is completing a MFA in Photography and a year long Canada Council New Media Production grant through OBx Labs/Ab-TeC and Initiative for Indigenous Futures where he is currently investigating virtual reality as a medium.
