Who Needs a Darkroom? Workshop w/ Barbara Reimer
June 27, 1–5 pm & June 28, 1–5 pm
PAVED Arts, 424 20th St. W. Saskatoon

Learn to develop film with eco-processes that utilize coffee, tea, plant materials, and more! Please note that this workshop is limited to PAVED Arts Members and requires an intermediate level of experience with developing analog photography. Registration includes both days of the workshop.

Day One / June 27, 1–5 pm
During the Pride Riversdale Art Walk

We will meet in the event space for a small presentation on Barb’s almost 20 year history with developing with eco-processes, coffee, plant material and waste. Art walk attendees are welcome to see the workshop in process and learn about eco-processing from a diorama. Workshop participants will be able to make and experiment with a semi-solid developer and phytogram/chemigram/lumen and sunprinting daylight processes in photogram style. It can take time to get an image so come prepared to get messy and expect long developing times.

Day Two / June 28, 1–5 pm

On day two we will be developing film in the event space with dark bags and dark tents in place of the darkroom. You will be testing your own developer with provided film for testing and learning about different developers. Bring flower petals, tea bags, coffee, oatmeal, pasta water from last night’s supper, leftover cola, etc. Please be aware of the smell of things; we might not be able to work with some plant material in the group setting. We will have on hand extra coffee and tea and we will supply the other ingredients to make the active developer.

What to Bring

  • $5 materials fee
  • Please wear clothing that can get dirty. The developers are “eco-processes” but they can still stain clothes or skin. We will have disposable gloves available.
  • (Day One) Please bring photogram/phytogram objects that you don’t mind getting dirty. Leaves, flowers, other plant materials, or flat objects work great for this. The left side of the image above shows an example using a flower.
  • (Day One) Optional but appreciated! We need: wood ash (if you have a fire pit please bring some ashes), citrus peels (dried or fresh), used tea bags, used coffee grounds.
  • (Day Two) Plant material to make your own developer. Flower petals, tea bags, coffee, oatmeal, pasta water from last night’s supper, or leftover cola.
