Production Residency: Barbara Reimer
May 29 – June 27, 2026
PAVED Arts, 424 20th St. W. Saskatoon

Every year, PAVED Arts stages a senior production residency. This opportunity provides for a longer term of engagement with the centre, usually lasting a month to six weeks in duration. The senior production residency is often organized around a workshop or series of workshops staged by the artist in residence, as an interactive means to develop contacts and foster relationships in the direct community. Further to such activities, every senior production artist-in-residence is encouraged to develop a public-facing outcome that may take the form of a presentation, performance and/or exhibition.

Barbara Reimer has a history with the eco-processes that predates almost all of the plethora of internet resources available today.  In a lot of ways, this residency will showcase a practice that is no longer an experiment.  Having taken the ‘darkroom’ outside of the institution for so many years, perhaps returning to the traditional darkroom, or a photo-based space, is the experiment.

During the residency and workshop period, Barbara will be working with a number of alternative processes and materials for lens based medias. Some are what one would call ‘sustainable’; some still start with the plastics and silver based materials we have been accustomed to with the “historical” image.  Rather than necessarily looking to sustainability as the goal (though that is one outcome), Barb looks to accessibility and responsibility to/for the work and processes to use up the collected, donated, expired supplies and ‘waste’ of the studio.

Stay tuned for related events announced during Barbara Reimer’s residency period.

Artist Bio

Barbara Reimer works with photography, digital media, and installation to investigate waste, process, and materiality.

Educated in Saskatoon and Toronto during the 1990s, Barb has an extensive background in commercial photographic and digital specialist areas, and has spent large parts of the last two decades independently researching and developing expired film in coffee and other “non-toxic” solutions.  Past and present work is influenced by “the responsible photograph” [a term coined during the Finding a Green Photo (2007-2013) project], documentary sculpture, the institution, travel, waste, and the “availability” and performative nature of photo processes.

Barbara has exhibited nationally and internationally, taking part in solo and group shows in Nicaragua, Toronto, Saskatoon, Michigan, Iceland, and Wuhan, China.
