California Typewriter in Berkley, California, is one of the last-standing repair shops dedicated to keeping the aging machines clicking. This loving tribute to both the shop and the machines it services delivers a thought-provoking mediation on the changing dynamic between humans and machine, encouraging us to consider our own relationship with technology. Featuring artists, writers and collectors who remain steadfastly loyal to the typewriter, including Tom Hanks, John Mayer, David McCullough, Martin Howard and Sam Shepard, California Typewriter questions our need for speed and convenience, and just who is serving whom—human or machine.
