The Micro-budget Program has a two-stage application process:

Recommendation Stage:
Prospective creative teams, with their project, must apply to one of the designated partners (PAVED Arts) for this program.  Each designated partner recommends one project to Telefilm Canada for consideration.

At the end of the Recommendation Stage, Telefilm will issue an invitation to the projects eligible to advance to the Application Stage. These letters will be sent to the designated partners.

Application Stage:
For projects invited to apply, the applicant then applies to Telefilm as a corporation using eTelefilm (see List of Required Documents below).

With over 100 manufacturers, Eurorack has become the most popular format on ModularGrid, due to its flexility and relative affordability. Given the massive selection of modules on the market, taking the leap into Eurorack can be a bit intimidating.

If you’re curious about going modular, this workshop can help to show you it’s many creative benefits. We’ll talk about the history of modular synths and eurorack, basic synth design, components, and module functions. We’ll also discuss control voltages, midi to control voltage converters, control voltage sequencing, and using a modular set up with software like Ableton Live. You’ll learn the difference between “east vs west coast” synthesis, while walking though basic patching examples, with hand-on examples. We’ll also explore planning a system on Modular Grid, using your own smart phone, tablet, or laptop.

Zero Days tells the story of how two nations, the US and Israel, united to create a piece of malware (known as a “worm” for its ability to burrow from computer to computer on its own) to destroy part of an Iranian nuclear facility. To their shock and horror, the malware Stuxnet, grew into an uncontainable viral force, spreading globally across industrial control systems, wreaking havoc on the world’s digital infrastructure and operations. A modern twist on the classic theme of monster turning against its creator, it is a cautionary tale about technology, power, and the dangers of government secrecy in a new world of cyber-warfare. Hot Docs Showcase is a monthly feature-length documentary series in  Saskatoon presented in partnership between  Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, PAVED Arts, and the Broadway Theatre.

This is the inaugural year for this series which runs from November 2016 to April 2017.

Screening on the third Tuesday of each month, Hot Docs Showcase brings Saskatoon six of the year’s most talked-about docs to local audiences.

To bring Saskatoon the newest and best in documentaries, we will announce the title for upcoming films at our monthly presentation.

On November 22 join us as we help present SPIRIT UNFORGETTABLE, the powerful, devastating and inspiring story of the iconic Canadian Celtic rock band Spirit of the West, and their charismatic frontman John Mann who, in 2014, at the age of 51, was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Winner of the Audience choice award for Canadian documentary at Vancouver International Film Festival and Top 10 Audience choice favourite at Hot Docs, SPIRIT UNFORGETTABLE is one of the year’s best films that can’t be missed.

There will be a conversation with Director Pete McCormack following the screening along with representatives from the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan.

After its successful launch in 2015, PAVED Arts once again requested the work of Saskatoon area photographers to be placed on city transit. An open call for photographs by local residents has been held every summer since 2015.  These submissions are narrowed to 50 images, selected by a community jury consisting of Local artists, photographers, people from the press and the University of Saskatchewan.

“Having Toon’s on Transit on our transit buses provides a great opportunity to showcase the talent of local photographers in a unique space. Buses are a part of the daily commute for many in our community, and now to have photographs taken from locals on the buses – it’s fantastic!” –Shreya Pahwa, Living YXE Instagram Photo Blog and 2016 Toon’s On Transit juror.

In the fall, 100 unique photographs by Saskatoon photographers are featured on Saskatoon City Transit. As riders enjoy their daily commute they will encounter a diverse array of photographs in the buses that will vary depending on their route and time of day.

As an expansion of the project this year, Pattison Outdoor Advertising has partnered with PAVED Arts to feature select photos from this years exhibition on the gateway terminal screens at the Saskatoon International Airport. This is an exciting development in this growing initiative that will provide a unique view of our city for visitors and residents alike.

Toon’s On Transit is a continuation of PAVED Arts programming that highlights the talents of local artists through our outreach and exhibition. Located in the former Toon’s Kitchen restaurant in Riversdale, a media gallery was constructed in PAVED Arts honouring the restaurant’s history. This gallery space has programmed local video work, as an opportunity to recognize our locale, as well as highlight emerging artistic talent in our community. As a growing annual tradition, we are taking Toon’s Kitchen ‘on delivery’ into every neighbourhood of Saskatoon.

We’ll be presenting a documentary, offering personal film inspections and consultations as well as a wrap up event to celebrate local films on the big screen.

All events take place at the Frances Morrision Library.

Thursday, October 6 at 7pm, we’ll kick off our HMD celebrations with a special screening of Random Acts of Legacy: The revelatory and delightful memoir of a Chinese-American family in Chicago, from the Great Depression through the post-war era, is uncovered through rescued home movies which were saved by a dedicated collector in search of their creator’s descendants. This film was the recipient of an Honorable Mention for Best Canadian Feature Documentary at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

Between October 11-28 you’ll have a chance to look at your 8mm and super8mm film on PAVED Arts equipment and learn about preservation and how to have them transferred.

Everyone who attends a consultation with their films will be entered in a draw to have 400 ft of their film professionally transferred thanks to Film Rescue International.

(1)    Join us at the Roxy Theatre (320 20 Street W) on Wednesday September 7 at 7:00 PM for a talk by internationally acclaimed artist and community organizer, Rick Lowe, titled Exploring Social and Community Engaged Art.  Free Admission.

Project Row Houses is a community-based arts and culture non-profit in one of Houston’s oldest African American neighbourhoods. Rick Lowe’s unconventional approach to community revitalization transformed this long-neglected neighbourhood into a visionary public art project centred on the art and culture of African Americans. It is a project that continues to evolve, more than two decades since its inception.  Project Row Houses approach to community revitalization includes youth arts education programs, exhibition spaces and studio residencies for artists, residential mentoring for young mothers, an organic gardening program, among other things.  It is also a development incubator for historically appropriate low-income housing design on the land surrounding the original row houses. Key to the Project Row Houses approach is continuous collaboration with area residents, artists, churches, architects, and urban planners. Rick Lowe’s vision is one that seeks to animate the assets of a place using the creativity of its people.  In 2014 Rick Lowe was awarded the MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship.  Among his many honours, fellowships, and residencies, he has been at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Harvard Graduate School of Design, University of California Berkeley, and the Nasher Sculpture Centre.

Introduction to Arduino

Arduino is an easy to use open source microcontroller platform. With an almost unlimited range of input and output add-ons, sensors, indicators, displays, motors, Arduino offers countless ways to create devices that interact with the world around you.

The Introduction to Ardunio workshop introduces the microcontroller platform, basic coding, and external resources. Through hands-on activity, workshop participants will learn to control LED lights, electric motors, and sensors.

A laptop PC or Mac is required. It is preferable that participants download and install the free Arduino software in advance. https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software.

Class size limited to 6 participants

Bruce Montcombroux will be presenting an artist talk on Friday, September 16th at 7pm just prior to the opening reception.

Bruce Montcombroux approaches material and electronics as a means to co-mingle topography-as-mapping and topology-as-organizational structure. Montcombroux is influenced by personal experiences that include frequent moves, residing in remote locations, immigration, and temporary living situations. Maps, generative processes, and the diagrammatic are his current focus. With TL;DR the artist describes his experimental process: “I position my work in the flat space of drawing, the presented space of sculpture, and the virtual space of digital realms in order to negotiate shifts between volumetric and illusionary spaces.”

Montcombroux holds an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan and a BFA from the University of Manitoba. His work has appeared in journals such as Grain Magazine in 2012, and in multiple press reviews. He was a mentoring artist for the RBC Artist by Artists Program at the Mendel Art Gallery, in 2013. He has attended residencies at the Banff Center, the Vermont Studio Center, and NES Artist Residency in Skagastönd, Iceland. Montcombroux has also been the recipient of numerous grants, which include the Saskatchewan Artist Board, and notably a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2012.

This event is held in conjunction with the Wanuskewin Heritage Park galleries new exhibition The Dancing Grounds by Jeff Thomas. The opening reception and artist talk is from 2-5 pm on July 9th at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

Jeff Thomas is an urban-based Iroquois, self-taught photo-based artist, writer, pubic speaker and curator, living in Ottawa, Ontario, and has works in major collections in Canada, the United States and Europe. Jeff’s most recent solo shows were Mapping Iroquoia: Cold City Frieze, McMaster Museum of Art, Hamilton, Ontario, Resistance Is NOT Futile, Stephen Bulger Gallery, Toronto, Ontario, and Father’s Day, Urban Shaman, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

He has also been in many group shows, including l:ke – I Have Motion, A Space, Toronto, Ontario, Land/Slide: Possible Futures, Markham, Ontario, SAKAHÀN, National Gallery of Canada, UNMASKING: Arthur Renwick, Adrian Stimson, Jeff Thomas, Canadian Cultural Centre, Paris, France. In 1998, he was awarded the Canada Council’s prestigious Duke and Duchess of York Award in Photography, inducted to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art, and in 2008 he received The Karsh Award in photography.

 This workshop will look into a variety of high and low-tech ways of working with sound and video in live performance situations.

During the three-hour workshop we will touch on the following topics;

 –       combining analogue and digital processing (sound)

–       combining live and pre-recorded material (sound and video)

–       “scrubbing” video to play directly from an editing timeline

The workshop will also include a basic introduction to Ableton Live 9:

o   Using session view in live performance

o   Importing Audio

o   Adding Effects

o   Working with Tracks and scenes

o   Participants can download a free version of Live 9 at: www.ableton.com/en/trial/
if they would like to work hands-on with the software at the workshop.

Nikki will also do a very basic intro / demo (for absolute beginners) on the use of MAX / jitter for processing live video:

o   The basic MAX environment: patchers, objects, patch-cords

o   Using Maxhelp files

o   Building a basic video mixer

o   Demo: Using MAX to add delay to live camera signals

Please note: for the scope of the very basic introduction included in this workshop it is not necessary for participants to have the software. They should only get it if they plan to continue exploring on their own and really want to “build along” during the workshop.
