On view January 24 – February 28th, 2020
Artist Mini-Residency: January 9 to 23, 2020

Opening Reception: Thursday, January 23, 2020, 8pm
Artist Talk: Thursday, January 23, 2020, 7pm

‘No Long Shadows’ is a new parafictional* exhibition by Miles Rufelds, produced in collaboration with the Monstera Foundation, and presented in collaboration with PAVED Arts.

Developed over the course of two residencies and two years, ‘No Long Shadows’ digs into the little-known history of an ill-fated 1959 film festival, prospectively titled No Long Shadows, that was to be co-presented by experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage and military-chemical giant DuPont.

DuPont’s then-president Crawford Greenewalt, inspired by the National Film Board of Canada’s contemporaneous work, and specifically the experimental animated films of Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart, proposed the festival as a corporate promotion – a showcase of cameraless, animated films, to be produced and screened exclusively on the chemical company’s new, underperforming polyester film stock “Cronar”. But before the festival came to pass, Brakhage and DuPont had a rapid falling out, Brakhage quit, and No Long Shadows was canceled.

Whatever confrontation the parties had, Greenewalt is said to have never moved past it. In 1965, DuPont officially halted research into cinematic film products. In 2003, Stan Brakhage died, after years of battling a rare form of bladder cancer.

The works in ‘No Long Shadows’ have emerged in response to the Monstera Foundation’s investigative research into the political, economic, and aesthetic circumstances surrounding this festival-that-never-happened, and into DuPont’s potential involvement in Brakhage’s death. Together with the Foundation’s researchers, Rufelds’ works follow the Festival’s narrative threads, tracing them into an associative net connecting the Golden Age of American Illustration to the Manhattan Project, to the invention of synthetic colours, to many the present world’s most contaminated landscapes.

‘No Long Shadows’ confronts a set of unwelcome material genealogies still confounding contemporary art today; long shadows shrouding sensory technologies with the threat of danger, aesthetic imagination with military funding, and the possibilities of artistic expression with calculated seams of influence.

*Parafiction: art in which real and fictional information is blended or confused

Among their many functions, conspiracies all seem to index a certain desire to narrate our increasingly impenetrable, opaque, and callous world in a way that is both comprehensible and aesthetically intriguing. Without disavowing or denying the very real dangers inherent to many contemporary schools of conspiratorial thinking, we will collectively explore how conspiracy-making, as an aesthetic act of distributed political storytelling, might be repurposed to serve an agenda of economic and social justice.

Real Sound: investigating an indeterminate continuum of sounds from natural and organic to artificial and synthetic. Presented by PAVED Arts & the Unheard Sound Collective.

Tetuzi Akiyama / Kara-Lis Coverdale / Marcus Fischer / Ellen Fullman / Ellen Moffat / Toshimaru Nakamura / Helen Pridmore / Sound of the Mountain / Jon Vaughn

Sounds Like 9 investigates sound on an indeterminate continuum, from natural and organic to artificial and synthetic. The experimental audio practices of this year’s artists invite us to experience the affective qualities of sounds on this continuum, while the nature of their performances invite us to consider the relationship between what we are seeing and hearing, and how this affects our conception of what is real.

At Sounds Like 9, amplified acoustic instruments, sounds originating from within a mixing board, a physically large “long-stringed instrument” and a virtual synthesizer together form a dynamic listening experience that tell a story of the idea of real sound.

About Sounds Like – An Audio Festival

Sounds Like is an annual audio art festival based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Started in 2011 by AKA artist-run, it quickly expanded to a three-fold partnership between PAVED Arts, a Saskatoon media based artist-run gallery and production centre, and Holophon, a non-profit organization that seeks to unite communities using sound as an artistic medium.

Under the direction of PAVED Arts through 2016–17, Sounds Like was reformatted as an annual project of sustained curatorial exploration with an annual theme. PAVED Arts engaged Saskatoon’s Unheard Sound Collective to curate the 7th edition of the festival, and Unheard presented the festival in 2018. In 2019, it is back under the directive of PAVED Arts, and presented in partnership with Unheard Sound Collective.

Artist in residence: October 28- November 7, 2019
Opening reception: Thursday, November 7th at 8pm
On view November 8 – December 13, 2019

PAVED Arts is pleased to present a new solo exhibition project by Winnipeg-based artist Luther Konadu. What follows is a statement by the artist: Gestures on Portrayal: By gesture, I mean, the hand or body movement one makes in uttering something they can’t quite let out with language alone. This is likely because it is backed up in transit somewhere within the jumbled immaterial thought that moves them to motion. This is a continuous knowing act of guessing and wishing for a proximity to articulation that never becomes.

By portrayal, I mean, not a depiction completely absorbed in representation but rather, one that is perhaps orbital, abstract, and contently fragmentary.

By gestures on portrayal, I mean, an accumulation of fractional utterances about the very subject of depiction through photography and its attendant history. The works here under this title come about through re-photography, assembled text, and images in relation to one other either through diptychs, or polytychs. It highlights a community of friends within activities of self-narration.

Artist Bio:
Luther Konadu is an emerging artist and occasional writer. He runs Public Parking; a publication for tangential conversations and critical thought. Konadu is currently based in Winnipeg.

PAVED Arts and BlackFlash Magazine will be collaborating to commission a new work from Luther Konadu to be produced in the PAVED Arts Production Centre and disseminated as an artist project in an upcoming issue of BlackFlash.

This summer, between July 29-Aug. 2rd, 2019, six youth from our community were given the opportunity to create music videos using songs generously provided by talented local musicians including Saskatoon bands Chunder Buffet, Eekwol & T Rhyme, Slow Down Molasses, In With The Old, Raeburn, Too Soon Monsoon, and Man Meat.

Through this free workshop, youth learned hands-on filmmaking techniques and skills such as stop motion, lighting, editing, grip, green screen, stop motion, and more. The resulting music videos were screened to an enthusiastic audience on August 2nd, in the PAVED Arts event space!

This workshop was generously funded through the Community Initiatives Fund. Thank you CIF, for your amazing and ongoing support!

Tuesday, November 12th, 7pm
AKA/PAVED Arts Event Space

Part 1: Basics of digital animation and video creation using adobe creative cloud.

Participants will bring a piece of 2D artwork they would like to add animation or video to, then over the course of the workshop learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop, After effects, and Premiere and create a companion video/ layered video to add to the piece. This can be done using animation or recorded video.

Andrei Feheregyhazi‘s Biography: My work as a filmmaker, animator and visual artist has been shaped by the three decades I have spent in Saskatoon and the exposure I’ve had to theatre and the other arts from a very young age. I was fortunate enough to experience the many aspects of theatre watching my father Tibor Feheregyhazi bring to life play after play on the stage of Persephone Theatre. It has been very influential in my formation as an artist. Because of this, I have learned a deep appreciation for the audience and community as the most important aspect of any work of art.

For me the “Art” happens when an audience engages with a piece, and it is that relationship that eclipses whatever relationship the artist has with the work.

While I have been exposed to theatre, dance and music, I discovered early on that I am a visual person. I took the lessons I learned while watching my father and developed a unique style of animation that has captivated the attention of people of all ages around the world. A style that combines paper cutouts, stop motion, and at times artwork and illustrations from artists circling the globe. It is a style that is unique yet lends itself to use the work of many to create a uniform final product. My work has been nominated for music video awards, shown on television networks around the world and featured in film festivals in Canada and abroad.

For the last couple years I have been exploring and experimenting with combining augmented reality with prints, paintings and sculptures in order to create artistic experiences in which people can lose themselves. I’ve also found it leads to a collaborative art experience. People work together with the art to make a piece that is uniquely theirs. I hope to make more collaborative art experiences for this and into the future.
