Field Recording Workshop w/ Darcy Spidle
Saturday, October 18, 2025, 3–5 pm
PAVED Arts, 424 20th St. W. Saskatoon

Co-presented by Sounds Like: An Audio Festival and PAVED Arts

When not performing, Darcy Spidle obsessively collects sounds along the rural coast of Nova Scotia, from waves and periwinkles to fences, guy wires, and other built structures. In his Soundalike workshop, he will share some of these recordings and discuss approaches and concepts in field recording. Participants will then explore the sonic environment in and around the venue using a variety of microphones and recorders.

Artist Bio

chik white is the alias of Nova Scotia-based artist and improviser Darcy Spidle. While best known for his work with the jaw harp, his practice has expanded to include guitar, voice, nose flutes, horns, and video. He has released numerous albums on international labels such as Kraak, Notice, Feeding Tube, Full Spectrum, and Sound Holes. His collaborators include Bill Nace, Chad VanGaalan, Xuan Ye, Colin Fisher, Daniel Tapper, Naomi McCarroll-Butler, and Bekah Simms.

Over the last decade, Spidle has toured Europe and Canada. Notable performances include a solo jaw harp concert in a 16th-century tower in Bologna, Italy (March 2023) and the premiere of Spore Wind, a contemporary classical jaw harp concerto by Juno Award-winning composer Bekah Simms, presented by Continuum in Toronto. His most recent performances shifted towards untuned acoustic guitar and voice, with an emphasis on absurdity and freedom. Montreal’s PAN M 360 described chik white’s performance at the 2025 edition of Suoni per il Popolo as “Abnormal and astonishing.”
